Chimney Fans
By Docherty Trade
If your appliance has been installed to manufacturer’s instructions and Building Regulations and are experiencing problems with lighting the appliance, experiencing their fire going out, or can smell smoke from the chimney when in use, then a chimney fan might be a great addition to their system.
A chimney fan is mounted onto the top of the chimney, and when turned on creates a negative pressure in the chimney. This causes smoke to be extracted up the chimney and fresh air to be drawn to the fire, which in turn ensures effective combustion. The fan should be accessible and generally only requires cleaning with no issues for chimney sweep access. Even in the event of a power cut, the chimney should continue to function as the fan will offer little resistance to the natural flow. The appliance should be allowed to extinguish and not be re-lighted until electric power has been restored.
It’s impossible for the fan to fall down the chimney as it’s fitted to the chimney top using mounting brackets or a flange plate. The brackets or the flange along with the weight of the fan will keep it fixed in place even in extreme weather conditions. An additional safety wire means the chimney fan cannot fall down from the chimney when it is being serviced or when the chimney is being swept.
Our range of Exodraft chimney fans are high-quality units made of cast aluminium and high-temperature resistant materials to ensure a long and reliable working life. All of Exodraft’s fans come with 2 years manufacturer warranty, which is extended to 3 years if you are an approved Exodraft installer. However, Exodraft’s fans have been known to last more than 25 years.
Want to know which chimney fan to use? Exodraft has an easy calculation method which works in a majority of cases for chimney fans on solid fuel only, using the table below:

If you want to get more technical than this, our team are happy to help – they love a challenge. During this process, we use design software developed by Exodraft. This enables us to design complete systems accurately and efficiently, whilst providing engineers with design reports.
All calculations and system recommendations provided by Exodraft are carried out in accordance with the relevant standards and regulations. All designs are stored electronically so that our engineers and technicians have a permanent access to project information.
